Incoming Swapo MP Willem Amutenya has urged Namibian youth to embrace agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.

In an interview with Ewi lyaNooli, Amutenya, a prominent figure in the Oshikoto Region, stressed the importance of youth involvement in all aspects of the agricultural sector, from production and labor to value addition and entrepreneurship.

“Agriculture is the backbone of every successful society,” Amutenya emphasized. “As young people, we have a responsibility to drive our own economy by leveraging our skills and knowledge. There should be no barriers to entry for youth in agriculture; everyone has a role to play.”

Amutenya highlighted the sector’s potential to address pressing issues such as youth unemployment and poverty. “By actively participating in all facets of agriculture, we create jobs for ourselves and others, ensure food security for our nation, and contribute significantly to our GDP,” he stated.

He further emphasized the crucial role of government support in empowering young people to venture into agriculture. “Government must provide crucial support, including access to land, water resources, machinery, and attractive incentives for agricultural production,” Amutenya said. “Furthermore, creating a robust market for locally produced agricultural goods is essential for the success of this endeavor.”

Amutenya’s call to action comes as Namibia seeks to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on traditional sectors. With its vast agricultural potential, the country has the opportunity to create a thriving agricultural sector that can empower youth, alleviate poverty, and ensure food security for generations to come.
