A Russian-backed initiative to resettle white South African Afrikaner farmers in the Vladimir region has drawn international attention and raised questions about its geopolitical implications, with Errol Graham Musk, father of tech billionaire Elon Musk confirmed as a central figure in the project.
Russian authorities have allocated 500 hectares of land near Moscow for farming activity involving Afrikaner families from South Africa, with the Vladimir region earmarked for potato growing and cattle breeding. Governor of the Vladimir region, Alexander Avdeyev confirmed the discussions on his Telegram channel. “We discussed the development of agriculture and the prospects for settling 50 Dutch-origin families from South Africa. The initiative is designed to begin with 50 families, with further resettlement to follow,” said Avdeyev.
Errol Musk, a South African engineer and businessman, has described Russia as “the most normal place in the world,” making his position on the resettlement project clear during a televised appearance on a Russian talk show. He has confirmed involvement in negotiating refugee status for Afrikaners under the Kremlin-backed programme.
The initiative intersects with a broader and contested international debate. US President Donald Trump has publicly defended the resettlement of a group of white South Africans as refugees, describing them as facing persecution, a characterisation the South African government has firmly rejected. Pretoria maintains there is no evidence of systematic discrimination against the white minority, which comprises approximately 7.3% of the population.
Analysts have warned that Errol Musk’s involvement and Russia’s active promotion of the resettlement narrative could strain South Africa’s diplomatic relationships, particularly given the country’s BRICS membership and its stated commitment to a multipolar global order. The episode has also been read as an example of growing geopolitical competition over migration narratives and influence across the African continent.
