The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a desperate appeal for N$228 million to stave off a looming hunger crisis in Namibia. The escalating food insecurity, exacerbated by drought and the economic downturn, threatens to push thousands of Namibians to the brink.
“The situation in Namibia is dire,” said Mary Ellen McGroarty, WFP’s Country Director. “Families are struggling to put food on the table as their livelihoods crumble under the twin pressures of drought and economic hardship.”
The WFP warns that without urgent assistance, the number of people facing acute food insecurity could soar to 750,000 by the end of the year. This represents a 50% increase from the current figure of 500,000.
The drought, which has gripped Namibia for several years, has devastated crops and livestock, leaving many communities with no means of subsistence. The economic downturn, coupled with rising food prices, has further compounded the crisis.
“We are racing against time to prevent a full-blown hunger crisis,” McGroarty said. “The funds we are seeking will allow us to provide life-saving food assistance to those most in need.”
The WFP’s appeal comes as the country grapples with the devastating impact of COVID-19, which has exacerbated existing vulnerabilities. The pandemic has disrupted supply chains, limited economic activity, and pushed many Namibians into poverty.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a devastating blow to Namibia’s economy,” said McGroarty. “It has made it even more difficult for people to access food and meet their basic needs.”
The WFP is calling on the international community to step up and support Namibia during this critical time. The funds raised will be used to provide food assistance, strengthen resilience, and support livelihoods.
“We cannot stand by and watch as Namibians go hungry,” McGroarty said. “We need to act now to prevent a catastrophe.”
The WFP’s appeal is a stark reminder of the human cost of drought, economic hardship, and the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a call to action for the international community to come together and provide the necessary assistance to prevent a humanitarian disaster.
