Meatco has achieved a prestigious “Blue Rating”, the highest tier of compliance, following a rigorous, independent food safety audit required by upscale retailer Woolworths Holdings Ltd., clearing a major hurdle for the Namibian beef processor as it pivots toward higher-margin consumer products.
The two-day assessment conducted June 10–11 by third-party auditors AVUTOM Consultants, evaluated Meatco’s production pipelines, food safety protocols, traceability controls, and animal welfare practices. The operations were measured against Woolworths’ stringent supplier benchmarks and South African red meat industry standards, according to an emailed statement from the company.
The successful audit marks a critical milestone for Windhoek-based Meatco. The state-owned meat processor is aggressively looking to deepen its relationship with Woolworths, one of Southern Africa’s most respected and premium retail brands, while positioning Namibian beef for a broader regional rollout.
“This Blue Rating is more than an audit result. It is an endorsement of Meatco’s food safety systems, traceability standards, and operational discipline,” Meatco Interim Chief Executive Ambassador Albertus Aochamub said in the statement. “Most importantly, it strengthens our ambition to supply Woolworths with high-quality Namibian beef products and expand the presence of our products in premium retail markets across the region.”
The certification dovetails with a broader strategic shift at Meatco. The company is actively trying to move up the value chain, transitioning away from low-margin, bulk beef commodity sales toward retail-ready, pre-packaged cuts that command higher prices on supermarket shelves.
The positive Woolworths review adds to Meatco’s existing matrix of international certifications, which include the Brand Reputation through Compliance Global Standards (BRCGS), Halaal certification from the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa, and European retail compliance stamps like REMA 1000.
